Mario Game Proves to Be 3DS’ Killer App in Japan, But It’s Not the Title You’d Suspect

It’s been said time and again since its release that Super Mario 3D Land makes the most meaningful use of the Nintendo 3DS’ three-dimensional capabilities. But it’s not the game Japanese consumers are flocking en masse to purchase for The Big N’s newest portable. No, siree: That honor goes to Mario Kart 7.

Nintendo moved 326,000 3DS units over the last two weeks and 423,000 copies of Mario Kart 7, which means its the quickest-selling game the system’s seen so far. If you could say the Nintendo 3DS has a killer app, it seems Mario Kart would be it. The handheld sold nearly 206,000 units last week alone, more than any other console in Japan combined. Now how long ago was it that we were predicting the system to be a flop?

Keep a look out for our Mario Kart 7 review. It’s coming up soon.
