Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Day-One Sales Top 459,000 in the U.S.; Fastest-Selling Entry in Franchise History

Today, Nintendo announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 for the Nintendo Switch, sold 459,000 in the U.S. on launch day lone (April 28th), making it the fastest-selling game in the long-running and iconic Mario Kart series.

As you may know, the previous holder of the first-day sales record was Mario Kart Wii, which totaled 433,900 U.S. sales when it launched in 2008 to a much larger install base.

According to Nintendo, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — only accounting day-one sales, meaning this percentage has likely gone up — has an attach rate of 45 percent, aka nearly one in two Nintendo Switch owners in the U.S. purchased a copy on launch-day.

In addition to the record-breaking sales, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also received more perfect review scores than any other Mario Kart game ever: with a current OpenCritic/Metacritic score of 93. This number makes it the highest-rated game in the series in 15 years.

In other recent and related news, the game was number one UK sales charts last week, and also received the accolades trailer treatment.
