Mario Creator Explains Why Nintendo and Illumination Partnered Together

The creator of Mario, who is also producing the upcoming movie with Illumination has explained why Nintendo partnered with the studio.

If you’ve not been entirely in the loop, Illumination has been confirmed to be working on a new animated Mario film which is also to be produced by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.  Illumination has been behind popular films such as Despicible Me (2010), The Grinch (2018), and The Secret Life of Pets (2016). The last time I saw a Mario movie was back on VHS with the Super Mario Bros. (1993) which was a live-action film that…I actually enjoyed as a kid.

In a Famitsu interview with Miyamoto-san, it’s revealed why Nintendo has agreed to allow Illumination to create a Mario movie. Nintendo Everything translated the interview which starts off with Miyamoto-san saying he heard “the CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri, wanted to meet with me” he adds, “he was also signed with Universal. So I met with him and talked.”

Nintendo and Universal Studios are working on Nintendo-themed theme parks around the world.

“I didn’t know what kind of angle he was getting at, but I’ll never forget when he talked to me about why he had failed before. That’s when I thought, “I think I can trust this guy.” He continues, “we decided to have him do the animation for us when he said, “What do you say? Let’s make something together.” It seems like things have been busy behind the scenes as Miyamoto-san explains, “It took a really long time for things to come together, but we finally found our way.”

Miyamoto-san wouldn’t say what the failures Meledandri mentioned were, but one thing we do know is that he likes that the original Super Mario Bros. movie wasn’t good.

In 2018, it was thought that the movie might be heading to theatres by 2020, but shortly after, we learned that it’s slated to be arriving in 2022.
