Marvel’s Spider-Man Sets Historic Records in Month of September on NPD Charts
Sales were up year-over-year in September 2018 with Marvel's Spider-Man and NBA 2K19 proving to be the month's biggest sellers.
Sales for the month of September 2018 in the United States have been released today from the NPD Group and Marvel’s Spider-Man has come out above the rest and in the process broke a few records.
Insomniac Games’ latest title based off of the ever-popular superhero character found itself in the top spot for September and as of now sits as the highest launch month dollar sales for any PlayStation exclusive title in history. In terms of all releases in the history of PlayStation, first-party or not, it is the seventh biggest release of all-time on a PlayStation platform. As of now, it is the third best-selling game of 2018, only ranking behind Far Cry 5 in first and God of War in second.
While it seemed like Marvel’s Spider-Man was poised for success, these numbers are even bigger than originally anticipated. To place these numbers in context to past Spidey games, its first-month sales were 37% higher than that of all other Spider-Man titles’ launch month numbers combined. It’s safe to say we’re probably getting a sequel.
What’s perhaps even crazier is that Marvel’s Spider-Man was also able to hold off NBA 2K19, which also had a historic release of its own. The number two game of September 2018, NBA 2K19 has achieved the highest launch month sales for any sports game in history since the NPD Group began tracking these figures in 1995. It now stands as the best-selling sports game of the year, the number 5 overall in terms of sales, and is the biggest launch in 2K’s history.
As for other noteworthy entries on this list, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey slotted in at number 3 with sales numbers improving by double-digits percentage-wise compared to last year’s Origins. FIFA 19 came in at fourth with the highest sales the series has seen since FIFA 16, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider rounded out the top five. Forza Horizon 4, which appeared in seventh place, set new records for its own franchise and achieved the highest launch month dollar sales in Forza history.

In the realm of hardware, the PS4 was September’s best-selling in both dollar sales and units sold. As a whole, hardware sales were down in September year-over-year, but PS4 and Xbox One found their hardware sales increasing on the month. Sales were only down as a whole thanks to a decline in units sold on other platforms.
