Despite ongoing work on Anthem and the active development of Dragon Age 4, it seems as though BioWare is also beginning the first stages of work on a new entry in the Mass Effect series as well.

The news comes by way of Kotaku, who stated that work on what would be the fifth installment in the Mass Effect series has entered early development at BioWare Edmonton. Anthem lead producer Michael Gamble is said to be the one directing the new Mass Effect project, but nothing more is currently known about the title.

This information isn't too shocking whatsoever given that BioWare has repeatedly stated that the Mass Effect series is indeed well and alive. Many questioned whether or not this would be the case after the release of Mass Effect Andromeda in 2017 wasn't well-received by many fans and critics alike. In fact, the game was such a mess after launch that BioWare eventually decided to can plans to release further single-player content for Andromeda mere months after its release. At the time, it seemed as though the future of the sci-fi RPG series could be in question.

While Mass Effect is likely one of the most beloved gaming properties of all-time, many fans will likely be far more cautious for their excitement for this fifth entry in the series after the fallout of Andromeda. It'll probably be many, many years until we even see the first teases of BioWare's next installment in the Mass Effect franchise, but in the meantime, let's just hold out hope that EA will finally remaster the original trilogy for modern platforms.
