Today, NPD Group released its mostly sales charts for the United States gaming market — and unlike last month — Nintendo Switch was not the best selling piece of video game hardware for the month of May: rather Sony’s PS4 has returned to the top spot.

Meanwhile, on the software side of things: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, last month’s top-dog has been replaced by NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Injustice 2.

According to the NPD Group, consumers in the U.S. spent $542 million USD on game-related hardware, software, and accessories for the month: a number down 11 percent from the $610 million USD posted during the same period in 2016.

More specifically hardware actually saw a rise, posting $147 million, which is up 7 percent from the $138 million of May 2016. On the other hand, console software fell steeply, declining 20 percent from $339 million to $271 million. PC software fell even harder: declining 48 percent from $23 million to $12 million. Lastly, accessories rose 1 percent from $111 million to $12 million.

According to NPD, software sales fell so steeply due to May 2017’s inferior line-up. Last May, the industry saw big releases such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Overwatch and Doom. This month in comparison saw Injustice 2 and the struggling Prey.

As mentioned above, Injustice 2 topped software in its debut month. Meanwhile, the other big release in May — Prey from Arkane Studios and Bethesda — came in at No.5. Slightly less notable releases for the month (but still some of the bigger in May) — The Surge and Rime — failed to chart. Rounding-up the more notable releases was one of 2017’s most anticipated VR releases, Farpoint on PS VR, which landed at No.16.

Below, you can view the Top 20 “Overall” chart:

As always, the games marked with an asterisk don’t include digital sales, while those marked with two asterisks don’t include battle.net sales.

Interestingly, NPD reveals that Injustice 2 — which apparently had a big opening month — has already worked its way to No.9 on the best-selling games of 2017 chart.

NPD also points out that the Xbox One and PS4 are both still collectively outperforming their predecessors, up 29% percent over the Xbox 360 and PS3.
