Media Molecule Wants Users' Dreams to Spread Beyond PS4
Someday soon, creators might be to publish their Dreams on devices not owned by Sony.
In a recent talk with GamesIndustry.biz, Media Molecule co-founder and art director Kareem Ettouney discussed some of the studios’ wishes for the PS4 exclusive Dreams. Currently, Media Molecule’s creation suite will only let users develop games and art within Dreams itself. However, if the studio has its way, the scope of Dreams may be expanding in the future.
In the interview, Ettouney made it clear that his studio wants to put players in a position where they can publish their Dreams‘ creations outside of the Playstation universe. Ettouney spoke to their plans for a commercial license. This will let creators publish and profit from their work. Originally, Ettouney said the studio already had it, but a correction was issued by Media Molecule that says they do not yet have it but are looking into it.
This is big news for the many people working away on awesome games and art in Dreams. That community is incredibly talented, and they deserve to be rewarded for their hard work. Obviously, Media Molecule has a lot of work to do to nail everything down with the commercial license. However, this is an important step in getting us there.
Ettouney went on to say that the studio sees Dreams as a 20-year game. To do that Media Molecule will need to take some major steps to keep players interested. Letting them make some money for their dedication seems like a good start. Of course, they’ll have to couple that with tons of updates and improvements. That said, it certainly seems uniquely poised to be a game with tons of staying power.
Dreams is available now on PS4.
