Like most single-player shooters, Metal: Hellsinger doesn’t give you a huge variety of weapons to play around with. However, the ones you do have at your disposal are all pretty powerful. To spice up things more, the developers over at The Outsiders gave every weapon a unique Ultimate ability capable of making short work of any demons caught in its path.

Metal: Hellsinger features a total of six weapons – and six Ultimates - including the two you get during the tutorial section. The other four are gradually unlocked as you progress through the game’s various Hells. As you run around the underworld, slaying demons left and right, you’ll notice a bar slowly filling up in the lower part of the UI. Once the bar is full and the icon in the center flashes, you can unleash your Ultimate ability.

6 Thunder and Hell (Paz)

The Unknown summons lightning down on enemies

Paz is one of only two weapons you’ll access in the tutorial section of Metal: Hellsinger. Despite dealing very low damage, Paz is surprisingly useful as it allows the Unknown to keep her Fury level up even when there are no demons around. It’s definitely not the best weapon during actual combat, though. The same goes for its Ultimate - Thunder and Hell - which summons lightning bolts that damage and stun nearby enemies.

Thunder and Hell can come in handy when combined with other weapons, but it’s not very useful all by itself. The stun is nice, but the Ultimate doesn’t do a ton of damage and will rarely help you against powerful enemies. Besides, Paz’s rate of fire is relatively slow, so simply charging up the Ultimate takes forever. The Ultimate can be helpful during certain Torment challenges, but it’s not reliable during the main campaign.

5 Fate (Vulcan)

Gravitational well pulls enemies towards it in Metal: Hellsinger

Vulcan is a crossbow you can unlock during the Yhelm level. This is one of the most gimmicky weapons in Metal: Hellsinger, as it can only fire two bolts before requiring a reload. Granted, the bolts hit multiple enemies and do a decent amount of damage. That’s not really the case with the Ultimate, though. Fate, Vulcan’s Ultimate ability, generates a gravitational field that pulls nearby enemies inside it. It’s a pretty neat idea, but like Thunder and Hell, Fate is mainly designed to set up combos.

Having an Ultimate ability like Fate feels a bit out of place in a fast-paced game like Metal: Hellsinger. The resulting slaughter can be very rewarding if you can land a good Ultimate and quickly follow it up with Vulcan’s regular AoE attack. But it’s pretty difficult to pull off in most situations. You’ll generally have a much easier time landing any of the other Ultimate abilities.

4 Seventh Seal (Persephone)

Persephone shotgun one-shots enemy with Ultimate ability

Shotguns are some of the most interesting weapons in gaming, so, naturally, Metal: Hellsinger had to include one as well. Persephone is a fairly standard shotgun that sacrifices range in favor of damage. However, the Ultimate somewhat balances this by allowing you to fire a powerful blast that travels significantly farther than the regular shells, albeit at the cost of a narrower spread.

Seventh Seal deals a lot of damage and can travel through enemies, but you’ll need to be very precise if you want to make the most of it. Ideally, you’ll want to first try to line up as many enemies as possible before activating it. Although better than the previous two Ultimates, Seventh Seal is one of those high-risk, high-reward types of abilities. You can potentially get rid of a strong enemy or a row of weaker ones with a single shot, but you can also miss completely if you don’t time it properly.

3 Infernal Solo (Terminus)

Terminus sword Ultimate ability slashes through demons

Terminus, The Unknown’s trusty blade, is deceptively powerful. This sword is your only melee weapon in Metal: Hellsinger, and it might start feeling useless once you start to unlock all the ranged ones, but appearances can be misleading. Terminus is arguably the best weapon against swarms of weak enemies even during later stages, while its Ultimate can make it work even against the strongest demons.

Infernal Solo essentially supercharges you and your sword, allowing you to slice considerably faster and deal way more damage with each strike. Even more importantly, the Ultimate greatly increases the range of the blade, making it viable against enemies that are usually very dangerous up close. The effect is only temporary, of course, but you can cause a lot of mayhem while the Ultimate is active. The only downside of Infernal Solo is that it’s not very effective during boss fights.

2 A Murder of Crows (Hellcrow)

Hellcrow Ultimate ability summons a swarm of crows to attack enemies

The Hellcrow is a pair of twin throwing blades you’ll acquire about halfway through the game. These medium-range weapons act like boomerangs but are much deadlier. In addition to being one of the best weapons for staying on beat, which is essential in a rhythm game like this, the Hellcrow also has a devastating Ultimate ability that summons a tornado around the Unknown. The tornado moves with the player and damages all enemies that try to get in close.

A Murder of Crows is a fantastic Ultimate to use when you’re surrounded by enemies and can also come in handy when fighting one-on-one against a powerful demon. The tornado lasts for quite a while, and you can continue to use Hellcrow while it’s active, allowing you to be both defensive and offensive at the same time. The only reason why A Murder of Crows doesn’t take the top spot is because of its relatively short range.

1 Echo of Death (The Hounds)

Clone of the Unknown opening fire on demons

And last but not least, we have the Echo of Death, easily the best Ultimate ability in Metal: Hellsinger. You acquire the pair of twin pistols known as The Hounds pretty early on in the campaign, and you’ll likely end up using them more than any other weapon. The Hounds have the highest range and the fastest firing rate in the game, but the main highlight here is the Ultimate. Echo of Death summons an invulnerable clone of the player that fires at everything that moves while it’s active.

Echo of Death is essentially a turret but better because it can’t be damaged, and it never misses. The clone fires quite a bit faster than the player, and its attacks are always on beat. One Unknown was already too much for the denizens of Hell, but now they have to deal with two of you. The best part is that you don’t really have to worry about aiming this Ultimate. As long as there are demons around the clone, they’re as good as dead. Echo of Death is so strong that it will probably get nerfed in the future, so be sure to make the most of it while you still can.
