As first reported by Variety, Dmitry Glukhovsky’s cult sci-novel Metro 2033 is getting a movie adaptation. The book has kicked off a sizeable franchise with two sequels and three adapted video games already released. Glukhovsky will work with producers from Russia’s TNT-Premier Studios Company, TV-3 Channel, and Central Partnership Film Company to bring the film to audiences worldwide.

Details from the announcement are relatively light. No casting or director news has been made available yet; however, those announcements should be coming relatively soon. Filming will start in 2020. It would be a big surprise if the cast and director are not in place by the end of the year.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Glukhovsky has attempted to bring the novel to the big screen. Just last December, the first try stalled when the author said that scriptwriter F. Scott Frazier wanted to “Americanize” the setting. Moving the story from the metro of Moscow to Washington D.C. would have made for a tough translation. So, Glukhovsky decided to find someone else.

Fortunately, Glukhovsky has found a group of Russian producers that will likely be very invested in keeping the original setting. The author told Variety that their goal is “to create a world-class blockbuster and stun even those who have read the trilogy and know it by heart. So as not to disappoint them, I am ready to become a creative producer of the movie and help create it with both my advice and action.”

The Metro 2033 film will premiere in Russia on January 1, 2022.
