Halberd Studios' metroidvania title 9 Years of Shadows will invite players to take the role of a pixel art warrior named Europa this March. 9 Years of Shadows will launch on Steam and Epic Games Store on March 27.

Publisher Freedom Games and the developer Halberd Studios have released the official trailer of their colorful metroidvania 9 Years of Shadows during IGN Fan Fest. The upcoming action-adventure titles follow the story of Europa, a brave warrior who is adamant to find and eradicate the source of darkness in her world.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the pixel art world of 9 Years of Shadows and showcases Europa with her different armors that allow her to use various elements. For example, Europa's Poseidon armor seems like it allows her to swim and make swift attacks, whereas her Gaia armor enables the warrior to traverse underground tunnels.

The minute-long trailer also reveals Europa's companion Apino, which is a small magical bear that floats around the protagonist. "Apino can shoot powerful projectiles at enemies, open locked doors, and shield Europa from ranged attacks," reads the description on the game's Steam page. Alongside its offensive abilities, the spectral bear also comes with the power to heal and purge the corruption during Europa's dangerous journey.

Another point worth noting about 9 Years of Shadows is that it has a high emphasis on music. The upcoming title offers a gameplay formula that allows players to restore their health by playing lullabies and making use of musical attack patterns during boss fights. Moreover, Halberd Studios' launch title also includes some of the most esteemed composers in the gaming landscape as well.

According to the description on the game's Steam page, both Michiru Yamane and Norihiko Hibino have collaborated with the studio for the title's soundtrack. Those who are acquainted with the Castlevania series would probably remember Yamane. Hibino, on the other hand, is mostly known for his works across a ton of games including Yu-Gi-Oh!, Bayonetta, Yakuza, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and more. The developers also left a link to a preview from Hibino's tune in 9 Years of Shadows, called The Serpent Prince.

If a musical metroidvania with pixel art graphics is your cup of tea, keep in mind that 9 Years of Shadows will land on PC via Steam and Epic Games on March 27. With its elemental combat, musical gameplay, and colorful pixel art visuals, it should — hopefully — be a solid pick for metroidvania enthusiasts.
