According to an article that was published today in Variety, the movie adaption that will be based off of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series will not only be starring Michael Fassbender, but will be co-produced by him as well. The actor has been in several movies big budget movies over the past few years which have included roles in films such as Inglorious Basterds, Jonah Hex, X-Men: First Class, and Prometheus.

However, as in most movies based off of video games, the plot doesn’t pull directly from any of the two (soon to be three) titles of the series. The story will be about a man who finds out that his ancestors were assassins after being kidnapped by a secret organization with links to the Knights Templar. He will then be sent back in time to ‘retrieve’ historical artifacts.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice" to play the franchise's iconic hooded hero, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

Unlike with the movie adaption of  Prince of Persia, Ubisoft plans to develop their film independently in order maintain the bulk of creative control. The company also has an animated series that is based off of Raving Rabbids in the works that will be appearing on Nickelodeon along with talk about producing Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon films in the future.
