Microsoft is Generously Unlocking Netflix on the 360 This Weekend

on January 31, 2013 5:06 PM

As we all know, Netflix is locked behind an Xbox Live Gold account so, even if you have a subscription to the streaming service, you can’t get to it without paying Microsoft for Gold access. This weekend things will be different, however. To celebrate Netflix’s original series House of Cards, and its premiere, Microsoft will allow you unlimited access to the service throughout the weekend, even if you aren’t subscribed to Xbox Live Gold (assuming you have a Netflix account, of course).

Also in the news is the fact that you’ll be able to use Hulu without a subscription throughout the weekend. Note, without a subscription to Hulu. In this instance, you still need a subscription to Xbox Live Gold. This is being offered to be able to take advantage of the streaming service’s Super Bowl content, including commercials from, not only this year’s big game, but as far back as 2008.

Chances are, if you use your 360 enough and stream TV/movies on it anyway, you already have an Xbox Live Gold subscription, and if you don’t, you probably have another device to stream Netflix to your TV, thus, in my opinion, making this pointless. But hey, if Microsoft wants to bring to the surface the fact that, in 2013, you still have to pay for their service before access to the streaming services you’re already paying for, more power to them.
