Midnight Club Dreams Sparked as T2 Declare Franchise as "Key Property"

A return is a return, even if it's going to be a mobile game!

January 11, 2022

When was the last time that we heard something official about Midnight Club from Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive? Well, the series seemed to be completely forgotten by the developers, but there might still be little hope for a soft return.

A franchise that once was a competitor to all arcade racings such as Need For Speed back in the time, has now been archived somewhere at Rockstar Games for 13 years.

Midnight Club was a popular arcade racing franchise from the developers of Grand Theft Auto during the 6th and 7th generation of consoles. The series has always been known for its deep car customizing and tuning systems, and illegal midnight races.

That being said, Midnight Club received no new entry since 2008. And the developers have never talked about the future of the franchise. But now, it seems there might be a chance for this racing franchise to return in form of a mobile game.

Strauss Zelnick Sees Potential in a Possible Mobile Version of the Midnight Club Series

Recently, Take-Two Interactive officially revealed that they have acquired Zynga for $12.7 billion, a giant mobile game development company with lots of products in various genres.

Since the announcement of this acquisition, speculations around a mobile branch of Grand Theft Auto raised in the gaming communities, and while that seems to be the most tempting option for Take-Two, there are some other opportunities as well.

During an investor call after the acquisition of Zynga, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, presented a list of the company’s franchises that have the potential to come to mobile in the future. Among the nominees, Midnight Club was also mentioned.

Furthermore, when Zelnick started to explain the opportunities ahead with the acquisition of Zynga, he first named some of the “key properties” of Take-Two Interactive, including Midnight Club and some other well-known IPs such as Grand Theft Auto.

Of course, we should still wait for a few years to see the first wave of mobile games from Zynga based on Take-Two’s IPs, but the managers at the parent company of Rockstar and 2K have probably nominated a number of big franchises to add to their mobile portfolio in the future.
