Back in 2016, Mojang promised to release a Minecraft movie in May 2019. Clearly, that ended up not being the case due to several shifts in direction. In January, Warner Bros. finally settled on Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist's Peter Sollet as writer and director, and today we learned when the Minecraft will (hopefully) be released.

The new release date for the Minecraft movie is March 4, 2022. This is still a few years off, but should give the production the time it needs to not be rushed. Alongside the confirmation of this new 2022 release date, the movie's premise was also cemented in today's announcement. As Variety teased back in January, the Minecraft movie will follow "the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld."

At this time, no actors seem to be connected to the project yet, though production and story details seem to be more palpable. Warner Bros., Vertigo Entertainment, and Mojang are all set to assist with the films production, and the game's developers seem confident in this new director, creative direction, and release date.

As Minecraft is a very popular video game with a distinct visual style, it will be interesting to see how this transitions into film. Minecraft won't even be the only video game film we can expect in 2022, as it is also the tentative release year for Illumination Entertainment's Super Mario Bros. movie. A sequel to 2018's Tomb Raider is also in development, though that film does not have a set release date.

DualShockers will be sure to keep you in the loop about any new developments regarding the Minecraft movie as we approach its March 4, 2022 release date.
