The Minions’ latest theatrical outing, Minions: Rise of Gru, hit theaters earlier this month to projected explosive numbers in its opening weekend. The film acts as a direct sequel to the original 2015 flick that centered around the gibberish-speaking yellow blobs. This marks the fifth entry in the Despicable Me series.

Illumination and Universal’s flick has been a long time coming, having been delayed multiple times due to COVID-19. It was initially set to launch July 3, 2020, but when that didn’t pan out, they decided to try again next year around the same time in 2021, before finally finding enough footing to release it this year on July 1.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Minions: Rise of Gru made $125 million at the Fourth of July weekend box office weekend, shattering Paramount’s previous record of $115.9 million previously held by Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Illumination’s Despicable Me series has grown into so much more, particularly with the Minions, from store shelves to social media -- particularly Facebook -- it seems the yellow creatures were everywhere. As such, the studio chose to capitalize on the success of the creatures and give them their own movie following their exploits as they seek to find a new master. In Rise of Gru, however, we get to see the mainstay trio of Minions save Gru and how the child found a fondness of them.

With the overwhelming success of the original Minions movie in 2015, according to Box Office Mojo, it’s hard to think they wouldn’t want to make another film capitalizing on the pill-shaped creatures more and let’s face it, no one should be surprised that the film is seeing as much success in its short time in theaters thus far. There isn’t much competition in terms of kid-friendly films in theaters right now. If all goes well, this will even be a bigger deal than just another successful film in Illumination’s hands, but rather it might beat out Disney’s Frozen 2 as the highest-grossing opening domestically for an animated film.
