Mobile Processors Could "Far Outpower" Consoles by the End of the Next Generation, Says Inventor of Oculus Rift
The possibility that mobile devices will outstrip consoles in the next few years is a very real one, says Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey.
If you look at the rate of how fast mobile phone technology has been advancing, I would be willing to bet that by the end of this console generation there are going to be mobile processors that far outpower them.
He’s optimistic that over the coming generation, the development of more and more powerful portable devices could very well lead to a stand alone Oculus Rift that can run its own computations. He also seems confident that these computations could be on par with or even surpass the power of a living room system.
It won’t be too many years before you can get a much better experience than a console in a headset that has everything built into it and is still cheaper than a console.”
