Some of you may recall the sequel to Final Fantasy IV, titled The After, being released on mobile devices back in 2008, then enhanced and ported over to a WiiWare title. Square-Enix announced today that it will be using the same team to develop a completely original mobile title called Final Fantasy Legends: Warriors of Light and Darkness (original, right?).

It'll feature old-school sprite-based visuals and other elements that made earlier iterations of Final Fantasy so darn awesome, such as random battles and a job system. The story, naturally, will revolve around crystals, if you couldn't already figure that out. It seems this title will be released in chapters, with an addition charge per chapter, at least in Japan. The game's prologue will be free, but thereafter you'll be charged a small price to download subsequent chapters.

Will this eventually come to mobile devices in the U.S.? Let's hope, although Final Fantasy IV The After never did. The iPhone platform would be a sure bet for a wide distribution, though, so it is possible Square-Enix would look into it. The title is slated for a release later this year in Japan.
