Mortal Kombat 11 — Arnold Schwarzenegger Will Not Be Voicing the T-800
Arnie will not be back to lend his voice to the portrayal of his most iconic role.
Last week, NetherRealm Studios revealed an entire set of new DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 11. Between now and March of 2020, the game will add MK regular Sindel as well as several characters from comics and films: the Joker, Spawn, and the T-800 from Terminator. Unfortunately, despite the MK T-800 clearly being modeled after him, Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be voicing it.
Schwarzenegger skipping the role is not so much a practical issue as it is an ideological one. There are approximately several billion people in the world who believe they can deliver a good Arnold impression, so I’m sure NRS will find a suitable replacement. However, this is a blow to the portrayal’s authenticity. Even if I can’t actually hear it in the character’s voice, I’ll know it isn’t Arnold, and I’ll probably be spending too much time hunting for little imperfections.
Schwarzenegger has spoken out against violence in video games in the past, so it did seem unlikely when Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat‘s creator, claimed that he “got Arnold.” Perhaps Boon was just referring to the use of his likeness and not necessarily to his voice. The character definitely looks amazing, and there is still a lot to be excited about. Arnold has a unique charm, though, and I’m a little sad that he hasn’t fully endorsed his role in MK11.
We should start to see gameplay footage featuring the T-800 soon, as he will be playable in MK11 in little more than a month–October 8. Until we hear more, though, check out the reveal trailer below. MK11 is currently available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It will arrive on Google Stadia in the future.
