The upcoming Mortal Kombat film that is currently in pre-production has now cast what will likely be one of the film's biggest roles.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Taslim, who is likely most well-known for his past roles in The Raid and Fast & Furious 6, has now signed on to Mortal Kombat to play the iconic character Sub-Zero. Taslim is the first actor who has been cast in the film. As for other famous characters from the video game franchise that might be appearing in the movie, details have not been revealed as of this writing. If Sub-Zero is making an appearance though, you'd have to imagine that Scorpion is a lock to show up as well.

This new Mortal Kombat film will mark the franchise's first return to the silver screen in over twenty years. The last MK film that released was that of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation back in 1997. This new foray into film for Mortal Kombat won't have ties to the past movies that released back in the 90s, however, and is meant to be the start of something else entirely. Whether or not it'll be as campy as those throwback movies remains to be seen.

Currently, not much is known about this new Mortal Kombat film other than that it's supposed to begin filming later this year. If that remains the case, we should hear more about casting decisions in the coming months.

In the meantime, the latest entry in the long-running series, Mortal Kombat 11, is out now on Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC.
