Mortal Kombat Vita Takes Cues From Mobile Games

NetherRealm studios dropped a gameplay video for their Vita installment in the Mortal Kombat series, and in addition to displaying some interesting new fight mechanics, we also get a look at several minigames which might look very familiar to iPhone or Android gamers.

The video demonstrates newly implemented touch inputs for fatalities and X-ray attacks, allowing players to dismember their foes with a bit of tactile surgery. It also shows some levels of the game’s challenge mode, in which Kombatants must utilize the touch screen and accelerometer to perform tasks like striking down missiles before they hit, balancing on a narrow beam suspended above gigantic spinning blades, and wiping blood off the screen when the ultraviolence is running high. Check out the video after the jump!

While all of these new mechanics look interesting and seem like they’ll breathe a little new life into the port, the most hilarious additions have nothing to do with Kombat in the traditional sense. The video shows a few clips of minigames where you detonate bombs to keep flailing kombatants in the air, and at least two Mortal Kombat themed versions of Fruit Ninja — a union which is truly greater than the sum of its dismembered body parts.
