Nacon has announced a new third-person adventure game set in the Robin Hood universe called Gangs of Sherwood.

The game was revealed during the Nacon Connect stream. In Gangs of Sherwood, the player will be taking control of one of Robin Hood’s Merry Men.

In the Robin Hood folklore, the Merry Men were outlaws who followed Robin Hood and upheld his ethos of stealing from the rich in order to give to the poor.

Gangs of Sherwood is being developed by Appeal Studios, a Belgian outfit with ties to THQ Nordic and consequently the mega holding company Embracer Group

The trailer, viewable below, showcases the aesthetic of the game. This iteration of the Robin Hood mythos appears to be steampunk-inspired, with each of the Merry Men having unique-looking colourful weapons.

The steam-powered gauntlets seem to suggest a level of technological advancement beyond the simple bow and arrow we normally associate with the world of Robin Hood. One of the game’s Steam screenshots displays airships flying in the distance which confirms the steampunk aesthetic.

The four playable characters are called Robin, Marian, Friar Tuck and Little John. Each of these characters will have different combat styles. Naturally, with four playable characters available, Gangs of Sherwood will be playable in both single-player and co-op up to four players.

The antagonist of the game appears to be the Sheriff of Nottingham. This should come as no surprise to those familiar with Robin Hood and the Sheriff is the outlaw’s most common antagonist.

This was not the only game revealed by Nacon during their stream, the publishers also plan on releasing a survival game set in the Terminator universe.

Gangs of Sherwood is planned to release next year on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
