The NPG Group has recently revealed the video games sales for the month of September in the United States and publisher 2K Games has to be pleased with the results.

NBA 2K20 was the month's top-seller, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The annual basketball sim franchise is typically one of the best-selling games each year, so its appearance at the top of the chart is to be expected. That said, NBA 2K20 did so well in the month that it not only won September, but it now stands as the best-selling game in all of 2019 so far beating out Mortal Kombat 11. And to round all of this off, it also had the best launch month sales for any sports game ever.

Following behind NBA 2K20 for the month was that of Borderlands 3. The third-entry in the shooter franchise boasted the best launch month sales in the series' history and now stands as the third best-selling game of the year. Rounding out the top five spots for the month was FIFA 20The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and Madden NFL 20Gears 5, which also launched in September, ended up at seventh overall.

In the hardware space, surprise, surprise, the Nintendo Switch continues to reign supreme. With the addition of the Switch Lite releasing last month, Nintendo once again bested Sony and Microsoft in the hardware realm as it has nearly all year long. The platform remains as the best-selling piece of hardware in 2019 and that likely won't be changing any time soon considering the lineup of games Nintendo has set to launch later this year.

Lastly, spending on video games as a whole is down 8% compared to September 2018. This has been the case for most of the year and is mainly attributed to the lack of hardware sales that the PS4 and Xbox One are now seeing in their respective final year on the market.
