As we approach EA Play and E3 2019, a lot of games are either getting release dates or being revealed altogether. Today, we received confirmation from Ghost Games and EA that a brand new game within the popular and long running Need for Speed series will be arriving this year. Interestingly, this new Need for Speed is not going to be revealed when most would expect it according to a recent post by the game's developers.

The post starts out by confirming that "a new Need for Speed game will be releasing later in 2019" and celebrating the fact that the Need for Speed series is turning 25 this year. Because this is an important year for the series, the post explains that the developers are working hard to deliver the 26th game in the Need for Speed series sometime in 2019. It goes on to confirm that Need for Speed 2019 will hone in on what make games in the series what they are, namely cars, customization, and "a special essence that appears when all these aspects come together at a very high quality, an essence that helps create that unique Need for Speed feeling... and it’s exactly what we’re injecting straight into our next project."

Need for Speed Payback was somewhat divisive so it makes sense that the developers are taking the time to, hopefully, make a game that is a better celebration of the series. While Need for Speed 2019 seems like it will be a more faithful and traditional Need for Speed game, we won't know for sure until the game is officially revealed. New Need for Speed games are typically revealed in June at E3 or EA Play, but EA is bucking that trend and opting not to unveil Need for Speed 2019 in June.

"Just because we’ve done something one way for the last few years, doesn't mean we should continue to do so...Are you going to hear more about the next Need for Speed title? Yes. Is it being released this year? Yes. Will we be doing anything in June? No," the post reads. No specific reason was given for why they aren't showing off this new game in June, but the wording of the post makes it clear that they don't believe now is the right time to announce it. Considering Apex Legends wasn't even officially revealed until the day before it released and it still found massive success, EA has probably learned that it is better to hold off reveals until the time where they would be most impactful.

Not much else is known about this year's Need for Speed other than what I've mentioned previously in this article. That being said, this post ends with the line "the next time we talk, we’ll be packing our bags and heading south for the full unveiling. We’ll see you then," suggesting the game could take place in some southern location. Whenever EA and Ghost Games do finally decide to fully unveil Need for Speed 2019, DualShockers will be sure to let you know.
