Neil Druckmann Confirms Original TLOU Cast is Part of HBO Show

June 9, 2022

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann introduced original TLOU cast members Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker to the Summer Game Fest stage, confirming that the two have roles in the HBO series.

Summer Game Fest 2022 rounded out with a heavy-hitter, giving us updates on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer game and HBO series. Though the show still has some time in development before fans can watch, Druckmann revealed details that are sure to excite fans.

With host Geoff Keighley, Druckmann introduced surprise guests Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker to the Summer Game Fest stage. They revealed that these original TLOU cast members will appear in the HBO series – with bigger roles than mere “wink to the camera” cameos.

Voice actors Ashley Johnson (Ellie) and Troy Baker (Joel), known for their decorated careers, breathed life into TLOU’s characters; their performances resonated deeply with TLOU fans, and are certainly part of what made TLOU such an incredible experience. Though Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal have now stepped into Ellie and Joel’s shoes, the original actors have apparently still been involved in the show.

Though they haven’t revealed who their characters are, Johnson and Baker did state that their involvement is more significant than a cameo. It’ll be exciting to see their impact on the show, but for now, we’ll just have to eagerly wait and see. Johnson also playfully commented that she replayed TLOU Part 1 to “refresh her memory before working on the show.”

Druckmann followed up by stating that June 10th will be the final day of filming. He said, “It’s so authentic to what we made in the game… This is THE most authentic video game adaptation yet.” He mentioned that Ramsey and Pascal have “thrown themselves at these roles,” and that their relationship on and off camera felt “so similar” to the chemistry between Baker and Johnson.

No release date has been set for the HBO series, but players can find The Last of Us available on PS4.
