Over a year after the Tomb Raider film reboot released, Deadline reports that director Ben Wheatley has signed onto a sequel to the film with a 2021 release date and Alicia Vikander returning as Lara Croft.

Ben Wheatley previously directed 2015's High Rise and 2016's Free Fire. Additionally, he directed two episodes of Doctor Who back in 2014. Currently, his latest film Rebecca is in post-production. The Tomb Raider sequel will be written by Amy Jump with Elizabeth Cantillon, and Graham King producing under his GK Films banner. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM.

2018's Tomb Raider was directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug and it went onto gross over $274 million dollars worldwide. This was the first live action film in the franchise since 2003's Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which starred Angelina Jolie. Additionally, she starred in 2001's first Tomb Raider film. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider made over $274 million worldwide and Cradle of Life made over $156 million dollars worldwide.

It's unclear what the story or title will be. With 2018's film being based on 2013's Tomb Raider game reboot, it's possible that the sequel will be based on Rise of the Tomb Raider or Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The Tomb Raider movie sequel releases on March 19, 2021. Production on the film starts early next year. While we're waiting for the new film, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
