A new Dragon Quest Monsters game is in development for consoles according to Square Enix. The title was announced during the publisher's Dragon Quest Monsters 20th Anniversary "Coming-of-Age Ceremony" livestream.

As of right now, the title has no official name or confirmed platforms. Also, it's not going to be a sequel to the Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker series that released over here in the west on the Nintendo DS.

This new entry will be entirely new. Fans will be familiar with some of the game's cast though, as Erik and Mia from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will act as the protagonists.

Akira Toriyama, the iconic artist who's responsible for beloved characters and monsters from the series released some early drawings of both the main characters. You can check them out below. Toriyama has had a long history with Square Enix titles like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger.

If you're unfamiliar with the Dragon Quest Monsters games, they're relatively different from the mainline entries. Instead of having your main characters fight in battle, you'll be using them to capture, breed, and raise monsters that'll fight for you instead.

The new game currently has no release window. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 was the last title in the spinoff series to release in the west, it came out exclusively on the Nintendo DS in 2010. Joker 3 was never localized, hopefully, with the series' newfound popularity in the west, we'll see this new entry make its way over.

In case you missed out on more Dragon Quest news, another spinoff series from the franchise, Dragon Quest Builders 2was just confirmed to be coming west in 2019.
