Firefall is an upcoming game I'd literally never heard of until I saw this gameplay trailer recently upped by developer Red 5 Studios. After doing some reading, turns out Firefall's a team-based, massively multiplayer online action shooter that takes place on a post-apocalyptic, nearly unlivably Earth dominated by a large-scale energy storm called the Melding. Apparently you're one of the last survivors and you're tasked with getting rid of the Melding, fighting mutants along the way, blah blah blah.

None of that stuff matters, because the gameplay in this looks absolutely fan-freaking-tastic, like a turbocharged version of Borderlands. A beautiful, cel-shaded persistent world with almost OCD-levels of player/weapon/armor customization, crazy hectic competitive team battles, an intriguing resource collection system, and above all, free to play? ...I'll be in my bunk.

The bad news: Freefall's release is a ways away, with plans to have it available online near the end of 2011. Hopefully I can get into the beta; I can't wait to customize my character with all manner of huge, disproportionate armor and guns that would otherwise make no practical sense in a firefight.
