The Story of Inu-Oh

The movie is based on Hideo Furukawa's novel Heike Monogatari: Inu-Oh no Maki (Tales of the Heike: Inu-Oh) which is inspired by a well-known Sarugaku Noh performer named Inu-Oh in the 14th century.

However, the book and the anime adds a paranormal twist to the real-life figure. In the movie, Inu-Oh is born with a deformity so he is forced to cover up his entire body with a mask and fabric.

One day while traveling, Inu-Oh meets a blind Biwa player called Tomona. They become friends and gain fame while they sing and dance together. The musical story further delves into why Tomona lost his eyesight and why Inu-Oh was born as a deformed child as they try to break each other's curses.
