A New PSVR Will Not Release With The Next Sony Console at Launch

A PlayStation R&D Head stated that a brand new PSVR headset will not be announced to coincide with the release of their next console.

We have now gotten plenty of details about Sony’s next PlayStation console, presumably, the PlayStation 5. The inclusion of an SSD into the console is going will give developers faster memory to work with on the system so that they can create titles with faster load times and more seamless worlds. Now, we also know that there will not be a new VR headset to coincide with the release of Sony’s next console.

In an interview with CNET, Dominic Mallinson, Sony Global Head of R&D, discussed the future of PSVR and talked about the current plans for the headset. The current PSVR will be compatible with the next system.

He did state that there will not be a new headset for quite a while.  “There’s no reason for us to coincide it with a new console,” Mallinson told CNET. “From the point of view of the consumer, to be bombarded with many, many things – oh, you have to buy this, you have to buy that – is a message that we don’t want to send. In some ways, it’s good to have a little breathing space between those things.”

Now, there is no need to worry if you are a major fan of PlayStation VR like myself. Mallinson did mention that it is not going anywhere and they are looking to improve the headset in the future. Mallinson stated: “We do want it to be lighter weight, and easier to put on, less cables, less mess.” He also did mention implementing eye-tracking software in the headset and the current Move controllers evolving and improving from what they are today.

While I do love my headest and Move controllers as they are today, everything about the PSVR needs a nice upgrade. Now that the Oculus Quest has released, gamers can now have a completely wireless VR experience with a much better resolution then PlayStation’s headset. I do believe that Sony has the best exclusive VR titles, so I am very interested in how and when that next PSVR upgrade is coming.
