The ghost of GamesCom is rapidly approaching. While the whole summer has been like a drawn-out E3 and GamesCom for game announcements and news, Opening Night Live is still premiering big new reveals as always.Late last week, Geoff Keighley announced that he'd be teasing Opening Night Live by announcing some of the games that would be showing up at the event this Thursday. This morning, Geoff took to Twitter to announce that his show would debut a new look at Star Wars: Squadrons, EA and Motive's latest take on dogfighting set in the Star Wars universe.

We first saw gameplay for Squadrons after it was revealed back in June in EA's digital video event, EA play Live, but since then, EA has been noticeably tight-lipped about the game. Since the reveal, both Sony and Microsoft have shown off a multitude of games for their platforms and considering both have all but guaranteed that most games coming out this year will be playable on the next-gen consoles, it would be surprising if EA didn't show off a next-gen port of Star Wars: Squadrons.

Squadrons is a potentially promising departure for EA after their very disappointing handling of the Star Wars IP with the Battlefront games. Now that their initial contract with Disney is drawing to a close, showing what they can do with the IP outside of the Battlefront series is very important.

While they may have redeemed themselves after the colossally disappointing launch of Battlefront II by removing its predatory loot box system and releasing Jedi: Fallen Order, their image and connection to the Star Wars franchise is permanently marred.
