Next Super Smash Bros. is In Development

Once upon a time, Project Sora director Masahiro Sakurai said that once development is completed for Kid Icarus: Uprising, hardcore work would begin on the next Super Smash Bros. game.

Kid Icarus went gold last month, and yesterday Sakurai tweeted extensively about his work on the game, marveling at how much work the development team has already put into previous  Super Smash  titles. “It’s tremendous. How did we make this?” he tweeted.

What little we already do know about the next Super Smash Bros. title comes from an Iwata Asks column posted shortly after the game’s announcement in June 2011. Project Sora will be working on the title, which was originally slated for release on the Nintendo 3DS. Iwata encouraged the production team to consider developing the title for both 3DS and the Wii U, as both a portable and traditional console version of the popular franchise sounded appealing. Whether this is currently the case and if the game will be cross-compatible we have yet to hear.

I’m looking forward to beating the crap out of people with Pit in glorious 60-frames-per-second HD.
