Niconico Chokaigi 2020 is the latest game-related event in Japan to be canceled due to Coronavirus (Covid-19), following Anime Japan 2020 and BitSummit 2020. Outside Japan, E3 2020's official cancellation is imminent as well. However, Niconico Chokaigi announced as a replacement a brand new, online-only event, titled Niconico Net Chokaigi 2020, held from April 12-19. The announcement was made via an encouraging video, telling everyone who likes things, enjoy things, to meet together on the net and recreate the venue's Makuhari Messe's atmosphere.

Niconico Chokaigi is usually a place where many weeb games reveal new info or gameplay, through streamed events and live concerts. The upcoming PS4, Steam game Idolmaster Starlit Season was most notably supposed to hold a streamed event at Niconico Chokaigi on April 18 and 19, but it got canceled. Bandai Namco announced however that an Idolmaster Starlit Season stream will still happen in some way during Niconico Net Chokaigi 2020.

Niconico Chokaigi is also a great place for cosplayers, figurines lovers, anime otaku, and every fan of Japanese pop culture. Many Vocaloid and Vtubers concerts are held too. Needless to say, game tournaments are part of the party as well. The finals for the 5th nationwide Splatoon 2 tournament in Japan were supposed to be held there and were indefinitely postponed.

Niconico Chokaigi is a huge yearly event organized by Niconico Douga, the most popular video and streaming platform in Japan alongside YouTube. A lot of original content is posted on Niconico, most notably indie/doujin content such as Vocaloid and Miku Miku Dance stuff. Niconico also featured since many years ago plenty of streamers using an alternate voice and personality, doing the exact same thing Vtubers are currently doing on YouTube as it became a huge trend.

More details on Niconico Net Chokaigi 2020 will be coming in late March.
