NieR Replicant Ver 1.22 Adds New Weapon Story System Inspired From Automata

Yoko Taro also explained the origins of the Weapon Story system, present not only in NieR Replicant Ver 1.22 and Automata but also the Drakengard series.

Square Enix held on February 2 a new live stream for NieR Re[in]carnation which also included some new tidbits on NieR Replicant Ver 1.22 : the game will include a new Weapon Story system. A familiar system for NieR Automata fans.

NieR creative director Yoko Taro and NieR series director Yosuke Saito confirmed on stream NieR Replicant will include a new Weapon Story system. If you’re unfamiliar with it, here’s how Weapon Story or Weapon Stories work. As you gathered weapons, those weapons could be leveled up by using them in combat. Doing so would progressively unlock special stories focusing on the weapons. This is the Weapon Story system.

Yosuke Saito also stated NieR Replicant Ver 1.22 includes a “mountain” of different Weapon Story parts.

The Weapon Story system is also present in NieR Re[in]carnation, the first mobile game of the series. Stay tuned as we’ll soon publish another article with new details on NieR Re[in]carnation.

NieR Re[in]carnation Official Stream #0

Starting 21:00, Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro bring up Weapon Story and announce its implementation in NieR Replicant Ver 1.22.

On stream, Yoko Taro also explained the Weapon Story system, also called Weapon’s Memories, is something he regularly included in the games he directed. Most notably the Drakengard series, or Drag-On Dragoon in Japan. When developing the first Dragon-On Dragoon, his producer asked him to make it more “RPG like”. So Yoko Taro did that by adding a lot of text through the Weapon Stories. NieR Replicant however, had a lot of quests, so Yoko Taro didn’t see the necessity of Weapon Story. However, Weapon Story is coming back now with the upgraded version, NieR Replicant Ver 1.22.

Back at New Years, Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro also teased they’re working on two new games. We translated everything Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito shared on both projects in our past coverage. Yosuke Saito is also working on Babylon’s Fall at Square Enix.

The previous NieR series stream was the special 10th anniversary christmas stream. That one too included new details on NieR Replicant ver 1.22, and we translated everything here.
