Nintendo Announces “Nintendo Network”

on January 26, 2012 9:45 PM

During his presentation of Nintendo’s third quarter financial results, president Satoru Iwata announced the company will be launching its own online service for the 3DS and Wii U.

The service is currently being developed under the name “Nintendo Network.” The Network will “establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers.” This service will cover “competitions and communication among users” as well as digital content sales and “digital distribution of packaged software.”

The 3DS is already wired and ready to connect to the Nintendo Network. The “same infrastructure” is being prepped for inclusion with the Wii U. The service will allow users to create personal accounts, much like Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and manage multiple accounts on one system. There is no word yet on when the service will launch.

Everyone give Nintendo a warm welcome to 2012!
