Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase Announced For Today

Nintendo to show off previously announced games from their developer and publisher partners.

It’s been a weird year for Nintendo – short of March’s Nintendo Direct Mini and this month’s Paper Mario: The Origami King Nintendo Treehouse event, we’ve not heard much from the company. Fans have been clamoring for any information they can get, and rumours have been swirling of an imminent Nintendo Direct, which Nintendo just confirmed. Sort of.

Speaking on Twitter, Nintendo confirmed today they will “debut the first #NintendoDirectMini: Partner Showcase, a new series focused on titles from our development & publishing partners. We’ll share a few updates on a small group of previously announced #NintendoSwitch games.” The event is confirmed to be around 10 minutes long (Via the Japanese Nintendo Twitter account) and will be available on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel today at 7am PT/10am EST/3pm BST (Click here for a time conversion table).

While only a short tweet, there’s still plenty to unpack. The fact that the Direct is based around Nintendo’s “development and publishing partners” means we’re highly unlikely to see anything from the few upcoming first party games we currently know about. This is incredibly limited though with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel and Metroid Prime 4 being the most hotly anticipated of those we know.

The tweet confirms it’s focused on “previously announced” Nintendo Switch titles – ruling out the announcement of the much rumored Super Mario 35th Anniversary Collection. Nintendo also call it “the first Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase” implying that this will become a reoccurring event.

Despite there being no first party titles, there are a few games that could conceivably appear today. Hollow Knight: Silksong is a prime candidate, Team Cherry’s sequel to Hollow Knight was announced February last year as a Switch console exclusive, but that was the last we heard of it. It’s been even longer since we heard anything about Bayonetta 3, so it would no doubt be a welcome appearance should that show up today. And an announcement I’d personally love to see, a western release date of Persona 5 Scramble. So while there’s likely to be nothing first party related, there’s still plenty to get excited about with the possibility of these, and many more.

With Nintendo recently opting for Direct Mini’s, Treehouse Live events and game focused Directs (think Animal Crossing), it is interesting to see their change in tact. The last full Direct was September 4 last year and this is now by far the longest we’ve gone between Nintendo’s highly anticipated flagship showcases. Hopefully that changes soon.
