Nintendo released some new background information for the world of Splatoon 2 today that hints at what possibly happened to Callie in between the events of the original Splatoon and the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive.

This is being done through Squid Sister Stories, which appears on the Splatoon 2 website. The story actually takes influence from the last Splatfest, which pitted the Squid Sisters against each other, with Callie ultimately losing. So far, only the provolone is available, but what's been said doesn't bode well for Callie, who has been absent from Splatoon 2 marketing thus far. You can read the prologue below:

About nine months have passed since the final Splatfest

Twilight lowers its curtain on Inkopolis. Neon signs paint the dusk in brilliant shades of green and pink. The Squid Sisters dance on, as though driven by the Inkling love of battling for turf.

Memories such as these linger, vividly etched in my mind, but feel too like remnants of a long-forgotten past.

It happened the night the final Splatfest came to an end

The showdown of Callie versus Marie ended in victory for Marie, but the was no ill will between the two. The girls left the studio arm in arm, smiling and laughing as they always had. The bond between them would continue, unbroken for years to come.

Or so it seemed at the time...

As someone who sided with Callie during the last Splatfest I am very worried for her. Only time will unveil what actually happened to her, and this is certainty a neat way for Nintendo to build up hype for Splatoon 2's story mode.

Splatoon 2 will be available on Nintendo Switch July 28.
