Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have been asking for new systems since the addition of the Super Nintendo back in 2019, but the wait may finally be over soon with a new rumor stating that Game Boy and Game Boy Color will be added to the service soon.

This rumor started on the episode of the Nate The Hate podcast, which is hosted by respected Nintendo insider "NateDrake," where he revealed that he has heard we may be getting Game Boy and Game Boy Color games added in the coming weeks. Nintendo Life also followed this up by saying they have heard the same from their own sources too.

This timing would make a lot of sense considering that both NES and SNES were added as platforms in September of their respective years, even though 2020 did not add anything. There are plenty of top tier Game Boy and Game Boy Color games that are likely to be added, so we have compiled a list of some of them.

What Game Boy Games Could Be Added To Nintendo Switch Online?

Like with the NES Online and SNES Online lineups, I'm sure we'll see a mix of first party and third party games. There are likely to be more first party games, but third parties will hopefully be involved as well.

We will start with a list of the most likely first party releases that could be added based on their release on the 3DS Virtual Console previously.

Most of these should eventually make their way to the Nintendo Switch Online service, with the Pokemon games being the major question marks due to how The Pokemon Company operates with Nintendo.

  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Land
  • Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
  • Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus
  • Donkey Kong '94
  • Donkey Kong Land
  • Donkey Kong Land II
  • Donkey Kong Land III
  • Kirby's Dream Land
  • Kirby's Dream Land 2
  • Kirby's Block Ball
  • Kirby's Pinball Land
  • Kirby's Star Stacker
  • Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
  • Mole Mania
  • Dr. Mario
  • Alleywall
  • Radar Mission
  • Tennis
  • Baseball
  • Balloon Kid
  • Tennis
  • Qix
  • Mario's Picross
  • Game & Watch Gallery
  • Double Dragon
  • Revenge of the 'Gator
  • Pokemon Blue
  • Pokemon Red

We included Tetris on the above list due to how iconic it is and the fact it was added to the 3DS Virtual Console. However, rights may be a problem here, as it was later delisted from the service.

There are also some third party games that could be added over time, though likely not as many as the first party. Some of the ones like Castlevania: The Adventure that released on the 3DS Virtual Console are unlikely though, since it has since released in a separate collection on the Nintendo Switch. Mega Man on the other hand could be possible, since they were never put in a collection like the console versions.

  • Gargoyle's Quest
  • Mega Man: Dr Wily's Revenge
  • Mega Man II
  • Mega Man III
  • Mega Man IV
  • Mega Man V
  • Mythical Ninja Starring Goemon
  • Bionic Commando
  • Burger Time Deluxe
  • Adventure Island

What Game Boy Color Games Could Be Added?

Game Boy Color on the other hand has less overall games that were on the 3DS Virtual Console, but they are some very quality games overall.

The first party games in particular are very strong and should eventually release for the system, with maybe Pokemon being the major outlier if The Pokemon Company does not support the service. We also threw in a few that were not on the 3DS Virtual Console that we could see being added to Nintendo Switch Online eventually.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
  • Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
  • Wario Land II
  • Wario Land 3
  • Mario Golf
  • Mario Tennis
  • Game & Watch Gallery 2
  • Game & Watch Gallery 3
  • Bionic Commando: Elite Forces
  • Pokemon Yellow
  • Pokemon Gold
  • Pokemon Silver
  • Pokemon Puzzle Challenge
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game
  • Donkey Kong County (Not on 3DS VC)
  • Donkey Kong Country 2 (Not on 3DS VC)
  • Donkey Kong Country 3 (Not on 3DS VC)
  • Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble (Not on 3DS VC)
  • Pokemon Pinball (Not on 3DS VC)

There were also even less third party titles, but these were some of the standouts that could come to the service if Nintendo makes the right deals.

  • Harvest Moon
  • Harvest Moon 2
  • Harvest Moon 3
  • Rayman
  • Prince of Persia
  • Blaster Master: Enemy Below
  • Mega Man Xtreme
  • Mega Man Xtreme 2

These are obviously way more games than we may ever get on the service if it is indeed legit, especially anywhere near launch, but they are a good place to take ideas from.

We've seen how Nintendo likes to drip feed the releases over time, though they have been pretty good about launching with a solid number of games in the past.

More than likely, you can expect at least one game from most of the main first party series like Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and so on, with likely some of them getting even more. As mentioned above, it'll be interesting to see if any Pokemon games are added, since The Pokemon Company may not allow them to be given as part of the service.

For now, the idea of Nintendo Switch Online getting new retro platforms has us excited enough. Hopefully this rumor does pan out and we get this as an official announcement in the very near future.
