In an uncharacteristic move, Blizzard Entertainment announced today that Diablo III, their upcoming action RPG, won’t ship until 2012. The “open” beta has just started, with the first few invites being handed out to press last week. With that occurance, I personally figured Blizzard would be looking at a release date somewhere in the realm of November 29th or December 6th, because that’s right in the same area they have launched titles before. I guess that isn’t going to be the case this time around.
There are a metric ton of high-profile releases coming out this fall, but I can’t believe Blizzard would push Diablo III back because they’re avoiding those. It most likely has something to do with the massive amounts of spit and polish they tend to put on their games, not releasing until they feel it’s ready.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said as much: “With every game we make, the temptation is always very strong to launch as soon as possible. However, we didn’t put so many years of work into Diablo III to release a game that was almost ready. The beta test is going very well, and we look forward to making the most of the extra time we’re taking to deliver an experience that lives up to our vision for the game and the expectations of our players.”
