No Sparkly Vampires Allowed: “Dark” Looks To Make Vampires Cool Again
So maybe we won’t have to wait for the next Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver game to get a cool vampire franchise on consoles again. Kalypso Studios and Realmforge’s Dark has risen from the night to show the gaming industry how cool, dark, and dangerous vampires can be through a modern setting, third person stealth gameplay, and awesome vampire powers.
The premise behind Dark:
Your kind is still alive, even though they have been long since dead. They have lived undetected for centuries among men, but they are not men anymore. Vampires are not a legend, and you are one of them. Your name is Eric Bane, and yesterday evening, you were still a man. But when you woke up this morning, you felt incredibly powerful and thirsty — a thirst for blood. As a new-born vampire, you will soon discover even the world of vampires is a place of deceit and intrigue. In the course of your investigations, you will end up between the minions of a powerful vampire lord, mankind security forces and the secretive M17 special unit, which only goal is to hunt down and kill vampires for good.
DARK is a stealth and action-adventure game with RPG elements, in which you take on the role of the ultimate hunter: a vampire. Ambush your enemies in the dark, roam in the shadows and use powerful vampire skills to get rid of your opponents. The intricate story of DARK will take you in the midst of a world of blood and darkness, where the hunter is also the prey. Strike the other vampires, improve your character and develop formidable skills such as instantly disappearing from view to take your enemies by surprise.
– Use your impressive vampire skills and your powerful melee attacks to take on dangerous opponents under cover of darkness: not only police officers and elite soldiers, but also ghouls and other vampires.
– Make your way through many different landscapes, from the city museum to the fortress of the vampire lord in a skyscraper.
– Stealth and action meet role-playing: earn experience, pick your dialog choices and develop your skills to become the ultimate hunter.
– Impressive 3D Cel-shaded graphics.
Below you’ll see two videos. The first is Kalypso’s reveal trailer, which shows Dark‘s protagonist Bane stalking prey from the shadows, using a vampiric detective mode to get around guards, and using an ability called “Shadow Leap” to sort of teleport/dash across long distances.
In the second video, you’ll see late alpha footage from GamesRadar that was uploaded back in November of last year, and shows about 20 minutes of gameplay.
Dark is set to release in Q2 of this year, which is about March to June, to the Xbox 360 & PC. You can check out Kalypso’s Dark homepage for more details, and let us know in the comments below if you think Dark has what it takes to bring the vampire genre back to gaming.
