Yeah, noir-geeks are a thing. I am one. Whether it’s film, games, comics, books or whathaveyou, I will devour anything with endless disembodied exposition, rainy night-time city streets and fedoras. Neo Noir is a bit different. Take all the things you love about classic noir and inject it into another of your favorite genres. Like superheroes? You got Batman: Year One. Fantasy? The Dresden Files. The classic mix, though, is scifi-noir. That’s where we get Blade Runner, Snatcher, Dark City and now Gemini Rue.
Check out a trailer after the jump.
Winner of last year’s IGF Student Showcase, Gemini Rue is the story of Azriel Odin, an ex-assassin searching for a defector from the Gemini system, and “Delta-Six,” a hospital inmate whose memory has been wiped by mysterious, Big Brother types. As fate brings the two men together, players explore a world where life is cheap, identities are bought and sold, and a simple quest for redemption can change an entire galaxy’s fate.
From the synopsis and looks of the trailer, the game seems to have a nice contrast of gritty street-life and living on a sterile space colony. I’m on the egde of my seat wondering about in what ways these two worlds can collide. Visually it perfectly emulates the classic adventure games from the 80’s and 90’s. Let’s hope it plays like them.
Gemini Rue will be available as a PC download for $14.99 and as a limited edition disc release at $24.99. You can preorder both versions at the official website.
