Resident Evil VII: Biohazard & PS4 Lead NPD Sales Charts for January 2017

The NPD Group's latest report for January 2017 sees a software increase thanks to Resident Evil VII, while hardware sales have tracked downwards.

While the beginning of the year is typically known for being a slower time of the year for new game releases, this January proved to be one to remember with the release of high-profile hits like Resident Evil VIITales of Berseria, and more, with the results officially in from the NPD Group’s report for last month’s sales.

The NPD Group has revealed its statistics on retail hardware and software sales for January 2017, with Resident Evil VII: Biohazard coming out on top at #1 for software sales last month, with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue being the only other new release in January to crack the top ten, at #6.

In terms of hardware, the PS4 once again claimed the top spot for console sales at #1, while the NPD also revealed that the most popular console SKU was the PS4 Slim bundle with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which has held on to that spot for its fourth consecutive month, in terms of units sold. Xbox One, meanwhile, had its “best January ever” for unit sales, while Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition took the third spot for console sales, despite its continuing rarity in the market.

Overall, NPD reported that consumers spent $610.7 million on new hardware, software, and accessories across gaming products in January, marking a 4% decline from the same period last year. Largely, the NPD Group attributed the decreased to softer hardware sales, with the strength of software titles from last month (largely) making up for the difference, with software seeing an increase by 14% compared to last year, versus a 19% decline in hardware.
