Oath:Chronicles of Empire and Exile Opens on Kickstarter, Blows Past Funding Goal in Seven Minutes
Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile is the latest game from Leder Games. It mixes excellent art with a neat new gameplay system that is sure to surprise.
Leder Games is known for its high-quality board games with stunning art and great mechanics. So, it’s no surprise that Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile would fund via Kickstarter. However, I did expect it to take more than 10 minutes. But the publisher did it. Funding in just under seven minutes, Oath is on pace to easily clear $1 million by the end of its campaign. The game probably doesn’t quite get up there with the big boys of Kickstarter, but this is an unquestionable success story for Leder Games.

Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile sounds like a very ambitious board game design. The game is described as “a game about legacy” where each players’ choices have far-reaching effects. You might call it an interactive strategy game, but it honestly sounds a lot like a true board game version of a tabletop RPG with some nifty systems. There is no set narrative and everything is said to be open-ended. We’ve seen games try to board gamify tabletop RPGs, but never has one been as ambitious as Oath.
The thing that really perked my ears up though, is Leder Games’ claim that the game takes three minutes to set up. I’ve played north of 50 games of Gloomhaven and it still takes me nearly 20 minutes to set it up. If Oath really only takes three minutes, it will be much more likely to hit my table. There’s something to be said for a beautifully illustrated game that is ready to go in minutes.
Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile is on Kickstarter now. As of this writing, you have 20 days to decide if you want to back the project. It comes in at a hefty $90 price tag, but Leder Games has yet to disappoint.
