Oculus Quest 2 Leaked Ahead of Facebook Connect
Facebook is likely to reveal the Oculus Quest 2 in their Facebook Connect that's scheduled for this week Wednesday.
Last month, Facebook announced Facebook Reality Labs, the new umbrella for Oculus Virtual Reality and Spark AR alongside a new digital presentation about the brands’ future called Facebook Connect that’s scheduled for September 16, the same date as Sony’s PlayStation 5 digital presentation. Now, two days ahead of the presentation, Facebook accidentally leaked what’s likely to be one of their biggest upcoming announcements.
First spotted by John Papadopoulos of Dark Side of Gaming, tutorial videos for the Oculus Quest 2 leaked onto Facebook’s blog, Facebook Blueprint. The videos, which have since been removed from the site, feature some technical information about the standalone VR device, but no information on price or release date.
According to the technical information detailed in the leak, the Oculus Quest 2 will feature “nearly” 2k (1440p) displays for each eye, will be based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform and is set to have 6GB of RAM. While the leak is missing pricing and release date information, the Facebook Connect is sure to reveal both a suggested retail price and a release date, or at least a release window, but considering tutorial videos exist for the device, its launch is likely near.
One of Oculus and Facebook’s biggest competitors in the VR space, Sony’s PS VR, is likely to also receive a follow-up based on what they’ve said in their marketing and messaging. Considering Sony has a lot to reveal about their platforms, it would stand to reason that a PS VR 2 could be revealed at the event on the same day as the Oculus Quest 2. With Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo chasing different slices of the gaming market, virtual reality could become the battleground for the next iteration of the console war, especially if Sony and Facebook are set to reveal new iterations of their VR platforms on the same day.
