Opinion: Daisuke Tsuji Should Play Jin Sakai in Upcoming Ghost of Tsushima Film

Daisuke Tsuji was the perfect Jin Sakai in the game, he’d be the perfect Jin Sakai on the silver screen.

As more and more TV and film adaptations of video games are announced, I find myself constantly looking at cast lists.

Sometimes, it seems like Hollywood might nail it like with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie in the upcoming The Last of Us HBO series. Other times–usually–I find myself asking “what are they thinking?” I’m looking at you, Borderlands movie.

With the new announcement that Sony Pictures is going to produce a Ghost of Tsushima live-action film, I think that they should cast Daisuke Tsuji in the lead role as Jin Sakai.

Why Ratchet & Clank is the Most Important PS5 Game

If you’re not familiar with him on name alone, Daisuke Tsuji is the actor behind Jin Sakai in the original Ghost of Tsushima game released last summer. I think he’s excellent in the game. He was so good that he was nominated at the 2020 Game Awards for Best Performance.

At this point, he knows the character inside and out and clearly has the acting chops to pull it off.

All that said, despite his inarguable great performance, my fear is that he won’t be cast for the Ghost of Tsushima movie.

For whatever reason, great game actors seem to get the cold shoulder when it comes to Hollywood adaptations. Look no further than Jim Foronda, perhaps better known as the voice of Claptrap in the Borderlands series. Despite being a perfect fit for the role in the game series, he was overlooked when it came time to cast the film.

It’s hard to say that someone like Jack Black would do a bad job voicing a character like Claptrap, but there seems to be an unspoken precedent when casting film adaptations of games that the original actors won’t be in the pool of names to call.

My hope is that Daisuke Tsuji is the one they call when it comes time to cast the film. It seems like there’s still a ways to go production-wise before that happens, but when you have a talented actor like him really nailing a role, it’s hard to imagine the character being played by anyone else.
