Opinion - GTA 6 Isn't Coming Anytime Soon Due to GTA V Numbers

GTA V yearly earnings are the highest they’ve been since launch, putting GTA 6 in a precarious spot.

Several days ago, Take-Two revealed the numbers for its first quarter of the fiscal year 2022, which showed impressive numbers for GTA V, almost sealing GTA 6’s fate for the future. The eight-year-old GTA title almost hit one billion dollars in earnings between 2020 – 2021, which is the second-highest earned year since the game launched in 2013.

Last month, I reported on my YouTube channel that despite the rumours of GTA 6 releasing in 2023, it’s sadly not the case. The news was backed up by prominent game journalist Jason Schreier, who said “Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I’ve heard”.

My speculation following the information that was revealed is that GTA V won’t release until at least 2024 – 2025, with one of the main reasons being that GTA V is still doing incredibly well. The “when will GTA 6 release” question is a simple one to answer – It won’t unless GTA V earnings start to plummet. Put yourself in Rockstar Games’ shoes; would you release GTA 6 if your 8-year-old title is bringing in almost $1 billion in a year? Probably not.

GTA V Microtransactions

What’s interesting about the numbers is that the majority of the earnings for 2020 – 2021 have largely been generated from microtransactions, proving that the GTA V business model is not only strong but growing. GTA V broke headlines when it was first released, smashing the $1 billion mark in just three days, a feat that no other game has achieved. So even without the added bonus of a release, GTA V is still steamrolling ahead with no signs of slowing down.

What puts GTA 6 in a worse spot is that Rockstar Games still have GTA V Enhanced and Expanded to release later this year, which will almost certainly give GTA V another record-breaking year. Details on the Enhanced and Expanded edition are still unclear, but with a massive audience still clearly ready to purchase whatever Rockstar throws at them, it’s going to do well regardless.

GTA 6 To Be The Last GTA Title

I said a couple of weeks back that GTA 6 could be the last GTA title and, to be honest, these numbers from Take-Two on GTA V have made me feel even more confident about these claims. Rockstar Games are aiming to make GTA 6 as future-proof as possible and if GTA V can last over a decade, it wouldn’t surprise me if GTA 6 could do a hell of a lot longer.

GTA V Enhanced and Expanded is due to release on November 11 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5.
