Robot Entertainment recently sent out a press release giving out the console release date for their upcoming title, Orcs Must Die! Unchained. This hybrid of tower defense and action game will be coming to the PS4 on July 18th with a free-to-play model. On top of this, according to the PlayStation US blog, PS Plus members will get an ‘exclusive package’ with in game currency, skins, and other goodies for free until August 18th.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained is the third game in the franchise which has been around since 2011, mainly as a PC exclusive. The core mechanics of the experience is to build traps to stop waves after waves of Orcs (and Orc allies) from invading your fortress. One of the interesting twists is that you control a character on the battlefield as the attack takes place. So not only can you construct your deadly defenses but you can engage your enemies as well.

As the release states:

“The key to protecting your fortress is to build an impenetrable gauntlet of traps to hack, grind, flatten, gibletize, and incinerate foes.”

However, this will be the first time you’re able to play around with team-based action. There is a 3-vs-3 competitive mode where you and your teammates (human or CPU) can protect your area of the map while also causing chaos in your opponent’s base. The co-op elements of the second game are back again as well as game options such as Survive (defense gameplay) and Sabotage (defense and horde summoning gameplay). There will also be an endless mode along with weekly challenges to earn you in game currency, skulls.

Feel free to enjoy the Orcs Must Die! Unchained PS4 launch trailer below, which has the silly humor that the series is known for. Just don’t fall too much in love with the green monsters’ goofy designs, you will be slaughtering hundreds of them if you do download the game…
