Overwatch's Newest Animated Short Focuses on D.Va's Origin Story

Learn how Overwatch's mech pilot D.Va went from an eSports super star to a serious and fierce heroine in the new animated short, Shooting Star.

Blizzard’s animated shorts for their hero shooter Overwatch are always a rare treat, and the newest short, shown during Gamescom 2018, is all about everyone’s favorite mech pilot D.Va. While there isn’t too much the short offers in terms of lore, there is plenty of action, along with some insight on D.Va’s character and personality.

Her origin as a former eSports star is well-known, but the animated short Shooting Star depicts her transition from superstar to national hero. But as we see in Shooting Star, this transition was a burdensome process.

While D.Va at this point had already committed acts of heroism, she doesn’t seem to know how to take a break. The short has D.Va respond to a surprise attack from a group of nefarious omnics—and learning a precious lesson about accepting help from friends and allies.

Watch Shooting Star below, and be sure to check out new skins for D.Va and more heroes in the Overwatch Summer Games event, lasting until August 30.
