With a colorful cast of characters from diverse backgrounds, Overwatch has captivated players with the history and backstories of its characters outside the game itself, with new animated short films starring the cast to return in the future.

Overwatch game director Jeffrey Kaplan explained in an interview with Polygon that more animated shorts set in the game's universe are on the way and "currently in the works." Released before and after the game's debut last year, the animated shorts have helped to flesh out the characters and universe of Overwatch, while also being incredible pieces of animation.

Kaplan added that "the animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making," and that "we really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay - we can tell any stories we want." Kaplan didn't provide a window for when more shorts can be expected, but did say that the next season of shorts is "making good progress."

The most recent short released featured the introduction of Sombra, while previous shorts in the series also starred many of the game's characters like Tracer, Winston, Soldier: 76, Widowmaker, and more. However, a good portion of the game's characters have yet to make an appearance in the animated shorts, which seems like prime material for a second season.

Overwatch is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC - to catch up on the game's previously-released shorts, you can check out the full collection below:
