In a new video on their Play Overwatch channel, lead engineer Tim Ford and senior engineer Philip Orwig talk about Overwatch’s upgraded netcode for the PC version of the game.
The main focus was interpolation delay, in which the server predicts where a player is going and showing that on the client’s console. Those who have a great connection will therefore see the delay cut in half. People who do not have a great connection will be placed in a different grouping, keeping the game enjoyable for both parties.
There are no updates for the console versions, although Orwig stated, “we’re still investigating how to roll this out to on console.” A majority of the moves you will do are still predictive but errors will be much less and the game will become much more enjoyable for all.
