H1Z1: Battle Royale Review — A Small Splash in a Huge Ocean

Developers Need to Find the Balance Between Procedural Generation and Their Own Personal Touch

Developers Need to Find the Balance Between Procedural Generation and Their Own Personal Touch

by

on August 13, 2018 1:00 PM

As procedural generation becomes more and more prominent in gaming, titles like Chasm and Black Future '88 show how a more personal touch to the mechanic can help.

Procedural generation has been around since the early days of gaming, with one of its earlier and most notable interpretations being in Rogue, the ASCII title and namesake of the wildly popular “roguelike” genre. As the beginning of the end for Clementine's story, the first episode of The Walking Dead: The Final Season is setting the series up for an emotional end.

A lot has changed since we first were introduced to Telltale's take on The Walking Dead. With the introduction of Lee and Clementine's story in 2012, so too were we introduced to a story that would not only come to define an entire style of narrative-driven player experiences, but would also define the style of an entire studio for the years to come....

State of Mind Review — A Story-Rich Transhuman Adventure

by

State of Mind provides a cinematic, story-rich experience that examines the strive for transhumanism in a near-future setting.

Story-driven games are my absolute favorite to play; add in some serious moral dilemmas that test the boundaries of humanity, and I'm hooked. However, that is not all it takes for me to like a game; the story's plot has to actually make sense, the characters have to be believable, and it has to be enjoyable to play.
